We’re not just campervan builders. We’re campers. We use these vans every day with our families, and over the years, countless weekends away, late nights, and little adventures have shaped what Spartan Campers has become today. So, let’s tell you the story behind how our campervans came to be.

It All Started With a Family of Four

The original Spartan layout was born out of necessity. Joe wanted a camper that worked for him, his partner, and their two little girls. Four people, one van — and it needed to do it all. The double front bench seat was the first must-have. Not just for travelling together, but because when it swivels and slides, it transforms the cab into a family dining space. Joe remembers sitting around the table for the first time, all four of them sharing dinner, without needing extra chairs or awkward juggling. That’s when he knew it worked.

The Wardrobe That Changed Everything

The wardrobe wasn’t part of the original plan. It came about one afternoon when Stacey, halfway through packing for a weekend trip, said, “It’d be so much easier if I could just hang the girls clothes.” Shelves were fine, but hanging clothes kept things tidy and quick to find. That single comment led to the full-length wardrobe with a hanging rail and shelf you’ll find in every Spartan today — a small change that made a huge difference for family camping.

Late-Night Lessons

There’s nothing like a camping trip to teach you what works — and what doesn’t. One late night, half asleep and fumbling around for a drink, Joe sat up quickly and caught his head on the sharp corner of a cabinet. That sting turned into a new design rule: no sharp edges, ever. Rounded corners and smarter placements became standard from that day forward. A little pain became a big improvement.

When a Microwave Meant Peace of Mind

In the early models, Spartan vans came with ovens. They worked great, but one trip ended with one of the little ones burning her hand on a hot surface. It was a moment no parent forgets. The very next week, the oven was replaced with a microwave — faster, safer, and just as capable for heating meals on the road. It’s been part of every Spartan conversion ever since.

The Bedtime Story That Sparked an Idea

Another evening, while camping off-grid, the family settled into the pop-top for the night. The plan was simple: a CBBC bedtime story on the iPad before lights out. Except the iPad battery was flat, and there was no USB charging up top. The result? Two disappointed faces and one determined dad. The following Monday, every pop-top was fitted with its own reading light and USB charging point. Now bedtime stories are part of the Spartan DNA.

The Mattress Topper That Knows Its Place

Early camping trips revealed another frustration — where to put the mattress topper during the day. It always seemed to be in the way. So, Joe designed a topper that rolls up tightly and fits neatly behind the Fabworx rock-and-roll bed. Out of sight, easy to grab, and it doesn’t steal valuable storage space. That simple fix turned into one of our most-loved features.

A Cupboard for Emergencies

Some of our best ideas have come from moments of pure necessity — like being caught short while wild camping in the middle of nowhere. That’s how the cupboard beneath the microwave came to be. It’s designed specifically to hold a Porta Potti out of sight but within easy reach when you really need it. No awkward storage, no fumbling, just smart design born from experience.

Space for the Adventure Gear

Every Spartan has a storage area behind the rock-and-roll bed, big enough for camping chairs. That wasn’t a design afterthought; it came from packing for trips and realising there was never a tidy place for the camping chairs. By leaving the perfect gap behind the bed, the rear doors now open to reveal a ready-to-go storage zone — no rearranging required.

Making the Most of Every Inch

The electrical systems in a Spartan camper are tucked away in what we call the “dead space” — that one area of the van that’s otherwise unusable. It’s our way of keeping things functional but invisible, maximising every bit of usable storage elsewhere.

Over time, even the smallest touches have evolved through trial, error, and many cups of tea on the road. The overhead lockers were originally added as extra cupboard space, but it was soon discovered they made the perfect spot for a projector, the idea stuck. They’re now a favourite spot for discreet entertainment systems.

Cooking, Comfort, and Convenience

The fold-away table has been redesigned more times than we can count. Wobbly prototypes were replaced, hinges were improved, and now it’s solid, simple, and folds away cleanly when not in use. The outdoor BBQ point came straight from Lee’s love of cooking outdoors. It’s plumbed in, easy to connect, and means you can enjoy cooking under the sky without cluttering the inside of your van with food smells.

Listening, Adapting, Improving

One of the most meaningful upgrades came from a loyal customer who loved their camper but was finding it harder to use the manual bed system as they got older. Instead of offering a workaround, we developed the electric bed system, giving the same comfort and reliability with the push of a button. That same spirit of adaptation is what drives every new idea we add.

And when we arrived at a campsite late one night and accidentally lit up the whole field turning on the main lights, we realised something important — not every light needs to come on at once. So now, every Spartan has individual lighting controls, giving you just the right amount of light without waking the world.

The option of solar panels and larger batteries came from a shared love of being off-grid for days at a time. The hot water system? That came from countless beach days and the simple need to wash down sandy, happy kids before bed.
