Which Campervan Bed System Should I Choose for My Spartan Conversion?

By October 29, 2025July 8th, 2026No Comments

Comparing the FWX R&R Bed System with Mobiframe and RIB – and why we believe the FWX is the perfect fit for your Spartan build.

When you’re planning a campervan conversion, choosing the right bed system is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.

It’s the heart of your camper – a place to sit, relax, dine, and sleep – so it needs to be practical, comfortable, and built to last. At Spartan Campers, we’re often asked: “Which bed system should I choose?” There are a few great options on the market, but we’ll walk you through three of the best: the FWX Slide-Out Bed, the Mobiframe Bed on Rails, and the RIB Bed.

We use and recommend the FWX slide-out system from Fabworx in most of our conversions. It’s beautifully engineered, incredibly easy to use, and perfectly aligns with what Spartan stands for – quality, safety, and design that’s made by campers, for campers.

1. FWX Slide-Out Bed System

What it is:
The FWX bed is a precision-built slide-out rock and roll system designed here in the UK by Fabworx. It transforms from a secure rear seat into a flat, comfortable bed in one smooth motion. With integrated ISOFIX points as standard in every Spartan conversion, it’s ideal for family adventures too.

Why we love it:
At Spartan Campers, we reupholster every FWX bed in premium materials to match the rest of your camper’s interior. The result is a seamless finish that feels cohesive, comfortable, and truly bespoke – it’s one of the key touches that makes a Spartan build stand out.

Pros:

  • Effortless slide-out design: Converts from seat to bed in seconds.

  • Flat, comfortable sleeping surface: No awkward ridges or uneven joins.

  • Safety-tested and ISOFIX ready: Ideal for travelling with children.

  • Stylish integration: Upholstered in-house to match your camper’s theme.

  • Compact and clever: Designed to maximise usable space in your van.

Cons:

  • The seat position is fixed rather than fully track-mounted, so it doesn’t slide front-to-back like a rail system – but for most layouts, this isn’t needed.

For most Spartan builds, the FWX system offers the perfect balance of comfort, safety, and effortless usability. It’s a design we trust, because we use it ourselves when we hit the road.

2. Mobiframe Bed on Rails System

What it is:
The Mobiframe system uses a floor-mounted rail setup, allowing the seat to slide along the van floor to create different seating and storage layouts. It’s a strong, well-built system that prioritises flexibility.

Pros:

  • Adjustable layout: Slide the seat to suit your needs for travel, lounging, or sleeping.

  • Safety-tested: Fully certified for on-road use.

  • Spacious options: Can work well for larger vans where space allows.

Cons:

  • Heavier setup: The rail system and mechanisms add extra weight.

  • More complex installation: Requires precise alignment and regular maintenance to stay smooth.

  • More mechanical look: Lacks the soft, integrated feel of a Spartan-finished FWX bed.

Mobiframe systems are excellent for those who want maximum adjustability, but the mechanical nature of the rails can take away from the clean, fitted aesthetic of a Spartan interior.

3. RIB Bed System

What it is:
The RIB bed is a well-known folding seat-bed system often used in campervan conversions. It folds forward into a bed and has long been trusted for durability and comfort.

Pros:

  • Reliable and proven: A long-standing favourite in the camper community.

  • Simple operation: Easy to fold out into a flat bed.

  • Available in various sizes: Can be adapted to different van layouts.

Cons:

  • More basic finish: Unless re-trimmed, it can look like an add-on rather than a fully built-in part of the conversion.

  • Heavier mechanism: Folding can take a little more effort.

  • Less flexibility: Fixed mounting limits layout adjustment.

Rib beds are a dependable option, especially if you value simplicity. But compared with the FWX, they don’t quite reach the same level of integrated design and comfort we aim for at Spartan.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Each system has its strengths, but here’s our honest verdict based on years of experience building and living in our own vans:

  1. FWX Slide-Out Bed – Our Spartan Favourite
Smooth, safe, and stylish. ISOFIX-ready, M1 tested, and reupholstered to perfection. This is the bed system we trust in our own conversions – comfortable by night, sleek by day.

  2. Mobiframe Bed on Rails – For Ultimate Flexibility
Great for those who prioritise movable seating layouts, though heavier and more technical to install.

  3. RIB Bed – Reliable and Practical
A solid choice, but less integrated than the FWX once installed.

At Spartan Campers, we believe your van should feel like an extension of you – built for adventure but finished with the kind of quality you can be proud of. The FWX bed fits that perfectly: durable, easy to use, and designed to last the lifetime of your camper.

Choosing the right bed system is about more than just sleeping space – it’s about comfort, safety, and how your camper feels day to day. The FWX slide-out system stands out because it combines effortless usability with a beautifully finished, family-friendly design that fits perfectly into every Spartan conversion. Add our premium upholstery and attention to detail, and it’s easy to see why this is the bed system we recommend time and time again.

After all, at Spartan Campers, we don’t just build campers – we live in them, test them, and perfect them
