We were halfway to the campsite when it hit us. We’d forgotten something crucial—the camping chairs. As we envisioned a weekend of sitting on the ground or makeshift logs, we couldn’t help but laugh at our oversight. “It’s fine,” I said, trying to sound optimistic. “We’ll improvise.”
Upon arrival, the lack of chairs became the centrepiece of our trip. We used cushions from the campervan to create makeshift seating, which worked well until the wind picked up and sent them flying across the campsite. A friendly neighbour offered us a spare chair, but we declined, determined to turn this into a creative challenge.
The highlight of the trip came when we crafted a “seat” out of stacked firewood and duct tape. It wasn’t exactly comfortable, but it worked well enough to hold us through campfire stories and toasted marshmallows. Every time we sat down, we burst into laughter, marvelling at our ingenuity and the absurdity of the situation.
By the end of the trip, the chairs weren’t missed as much as we thought. The Spartan campervans cosy interior became our sanctuary for meals and relaxation. It reminded us that sometimes, forgetting something isn’t a disaster—it’s an opportunity for creativity and humour. And yes, we’ve since added chairs to our pre-trip checklist!
