Technology is wonderful, except when it leads you down the narrowest lane imaginable. It was supposed to be a straightforward route to our campsite, but our GPS had other plans. As we turned onto a charming but increasingly claustrophobic country lane, it quickly became clear we’d taken a wrong turn.

The hedgerows grew tighter with every passing meter, brushing the sides of our Spartan campervan. “This can’t be right,” I said, glancing nervously at my partner. The lane narrowed further, leaving just enough room for the van to squeeze through.

Then, to our dismay, we encountered a tractor coming the other way. The driver gave us a bemused smile and gestured for us to reverse. What followed was a comedic symphony of shouted directions, frantic mirror-checking, and the occasional thud of the hedgerows brushing the van’s exterior. By some miracle, we managed to backtrack to a wider section of the lane, where the tractor passed with a friendly wave.

Once we’d reached solid ground (and an actual road), we pulled over to regroup and laugh at the absurdity of it all. The Spartan campervan had handled the ordeal like a champ, its compact size making it easier to manoeuvre than a larger motorhome would have been.

The detour added an hour to our journey, but it also gave us an unexpected adventure to recount. Later that night, as we sat by the campfire at the correct campsite, we joked about renaming our GPS “The Adventure Generator.”

The lesson? Even wrong turns can lead to the best stories. And with a reliable, manoeuvrable campervan like our Spartan, no road is too daunting—even if it feels like you’re threading a needle in the middle of the countryside.
