There’s nothing quite like a campfire under a star-filled sky. Marshmallows, laughter, and storytelling—it’s the quintessential camping experience. One evening, nestled in a quiet woodland campsite, we set up a small fire, ready to toast marshmallows to golden perfection. Little did we know, we were not the only ones interested in the sugary treats.
As the flames flickered and we skewered our marshmallows, I noticed a rustling sound coming from the nearby bushes. Thinking it might be the wind, we carried on with our campfire fun. Then, out of nowhere, a small, furry creature darted toward the firepit. It was a squirrel, eyes locked on the bag of marshmallows sitting on the campervan step.
We froze, watching in amusement as the bold squirrel grabbed the entire bag with its tiny paws and attempted to drag it away. “Hey! That’s ours!” my partner shouted, leaping up to retrieve the stolen goods. The squirrel, startled but unrelenting, held on for dear life. A brief tug-of-war ensued, ending with the squirrel letting go and scampering off, leaving us doubled over with laughter.
Unfortunately, the bag was now riddled with tiny claw marks and punctures. Determined not to let the squirrel’s antics ruin our night, we salvaged the untouched marshmallows and carefully roasted them over the fire. Each toasted marshmallow tasted sweeter, thanks to the hilarity of the situation.
The Spartan campervans ample storage came in handy after that—all food items were securely stashed away for the remainder of the trip. The squirrel didn’t return, but its brief cameo became the highlight of our camping adventure. To this day, whenever we toast marshmallows, we joke about the “marshmallow heist” and keep an eye out for sneaky critters looking to join the feast.
